Fantastic dyno day with this BMW 128ti. We soon had our 3 Channel Pro Petrol chip tuning box installed and it was up on the rollers for its rolling road dyno tune...

The 128ti sits comfortably in the hot-hatch society, with solid stock performance figures and some unique styling. Using the B48 engine, we already know the capabilities and what power can be unlocked from these, and we can really delve into its true potential, utilising any reserved power.

BMW switched things up for the 128ti, moving from their traditional rear-wheel drivetrain to their first front-wheel drive hot hatch. Powered by that B48 engine, BMW claim stock figures of 265hp with 400Nm coming from the 2.0 turbocharged petrol engine.

So a pretty unique package amongst BMWs usual lineup. However, we can definitely take things up a notch. Adding a decent amount of power and torque, and really transforming how those gains are applied across the rev range, taking into account that front-wheel drive system, and applying them exactly where needed.

We’ve spent a considerable time with the B48 engine now, and using our 3 Channel Pro Petrol box, can generate some pretty superb performance.

So let's see how the stock run went...

If you take a look at the dyno graph from this stock run below, you'll see that BMW are pretty bang on with what they quote on this one. Not far off on either power or torque, coming in at 267PS with 405Nm of torque, so it's great to see some consistency from their claims here.

Now let’s see what we can achieve with our box…

Dyno testing before and after shows healthy gains across the rev range, with a significant increase in power and torque, really transforming how the car feels to drive.

Peak power was increased, we were able to lift it from 267hp at stock, up to 309hp with the box. If you take a look at the dyno graph here, you can really see how we change that curve, bringing that power in sooner.

Torque figures with our box is also greatly improved. At stock the engine produced 405Nm, and now 462Nm with the box. Again, taking a look at the graph you can really see the lift in that curve, taking it across the entire rev range. We take care to evenly distribute the gains here, as mentioned the 128ti uses a front-wheel drive system, and focusing too much in a certain part of the revs could have a detrimental effect on performance.
