If you own a modern BMW and want more performance, you'll soon run into three names: bootmod3, MHD and the Bluespark tuning box. All three can make your car noticeably quicker. But they work in very different ways, they cost different amounts once you add everything up, and each suits a different kind of owner.

We sell all three options, and we also offer custom mapping on our four-wheel-drive dyno. This guide is meant to help you choose the option that suits you and your car best.

The short answer

  • Chasing maximum power, with upgraded parts, custom maps, burbles or track days? A custom flash tune (bootmod3 or MHD) is hard to beat.
  • Car under warranty, on finance or on a lease? Or a newer BMW with a locked DME? A tuning box is usually the simpler, lower-cost, lower-risk route.
  • Driving a diesel? Your choice is mostly made for you. Flash platforms are built around petrol engines, while tuning boxes and our custom maps cover BMW diesels well.

The rest of this article explains why.

How each one works

bootmod3 (BM3)

bootmod3, developed by proTUNING Freaks, is a flash tune. It rewrites the software inside your car's engine computer (the DME) over the OBD port. You buy a licence that is locked to your car's VIN, connect with an ENET cable or Wi-Fi adapter, and flash an off-the-shelf (OTS) map such as Stage 1 or Stage 2 from a phone or laptop app. The platform is cloud-based: your maps and logs live on bootmod3's servers.

Features include map switching, datalogging, burble and exhaust-flap control, cold-start changes, a map editor and access to custom tuners. Supported engines include the B46, B48, B58, N55, N63, S55, S58 and S63.

MHD

MHD is also a flash tune and does broadly the same job. You get an app on your phone, a VIN-locked licence and an MHD wireless adapter or cable. The licensing is more modular. The basic Flasher licence lets you flash maps but includes no OTS maps, which are sold as separate map packs or bundled in the "Super Licence". MHD is popular for its fast flash times, real-time tuning on some engines and plenty of extra features.

A tuning box (piggyback module)

A tuning box doesn't touch the DME's software at all. It's a small module that plugs in between the engine's sensors and the DME. It adjusts the signals the DME sees, typically boost, MAP, cam signal and/or fuel-rail pressure, so the engine makes more power and torque while the factory software stays untouched.

Fitting takes under 10 minutes on most models, with basic tools. Removing it returns the car to completely standard, and it leaves no trace in the DME's software because nothing was ever written to it.

Which one suits you?

If your car is under warranty, on finance or leased

This is where the difference matters most.

With a flash tune, the engine computer's software has been changed. Both bootmod3 and MHD can flash the car back to stock, and some tools work hard to hide the evidence. Even the bootmod3 team has said publicly that returning to stock is a convenience feature, not a way to hide a tune from BMW. Experienced owners on the forums agree that a determined dealer can still find signs that the DME has been flashed. If an engine or gearbox fault is traced back to a tune, the claim can be refused. It also matters if you plan to trade your car in to BMW, as they won't sell a previously flashed car as Approved Used.

A tuning box never writes to the DME. Unplug it before a service, or before the car goes back to the leasing company, and the software is exactly as it left the factory. That's why it's the usual choice for owners who want extra performance without putting a warranty or a lease return at risk.

If you have a newer BMW with a locked DME

Around mid-2020, BMW began shipping engine computers with a locked bootloader that blocks OBD flashing. Older cars can also be locked by a dealer software update. Before bootmod3 or MHD can flash a locked car, the DME usually has to come out of the car to be unlocked, either on a bench by a specialist or by posting it to a company with Autotuner or similar equipment. We offer this service, but it adds cost, time and hassle.

There's also an ongoing risk. Specialists warn that a later BMW software update, such as one done during a dealer visit, can relock the DME and wipe the tune. You'd then need to pay for another unlock.

A tuning box doesn't care whether the DME is locked, because it never needs to write to it. For many G-series owners, this alone makes a box the practical choice.

If you drive a diesel

The 320d, 520d, 530d, X5 30d, 40d and M50d are some of the most popular BMWs on UK roads, and they respond very well to extra torque. However, bootmod3 and MHD are built around BMW's petrol engines. Their supported-engine lists are almost entirely B48, B58, N55, S55, S58 and similar.

If you drive a B47, B57 or N57 diesel, a tuning box is usually the obvious answer. Typical gains on popular diesels:

  • 320d B47: +35 bhp / +70 Nm
  • 330d / 530d B57: +60 bhp / +90 Nm
  • e.g. X5 40d: +70 bhp / +103 Nm

If you're after maximum power

If you're building a car with a big turbo, a downpipe, an upgraded intercooler and fuel pump, running ethanol blends, or heading to the track, a flash tune is the right tool and we won't pretend otherwise. Rewriting the DME lets a tuner change boost targets, ignition timing, fuelling and torque limits across the board, as well as gearbox torque limits, burbles, speed limiters and cold-start behaviour. Stage 3 and custom maps on a modified B58 or S58 go well beyond what a plug-in module is designed to do.

The trade-off is that you take on more: an unlock if your car needs one, possible warranty exposure, keeping on top of software updates, and the responsibility of running a heavily modified engine.

If you want a noticeable step up for everyday driving

Most people who tune a BMW want stronger mid-range pull, easier overtakes and a car that feels more alive. They're not after a dyno-sheet record. For that driver, a tuning box delivers most of the benefit with very little commitment:

  • Fits in 10 minutes, with no laptop, no cable and no app setup.
  • Typical gains: up to +30% power and 40% torque on supported engines.
  • Fully removable: the car goes back to standard whenever you want.
  • Moves with you: when you change car, our reprogramming service can set your module up for the new vehicle for £89.99.
  • Backed by a 2-year warranty and a 28-day money-back guarantee.
  • Adjustable instantly via Bluetooth: Bluetooth option available.

The honest limits of a box

Because a tuning box works through the factory software rather than replacing it, there are some things a flash tune can do that it can't. It won't add exhaust burbles, remove the speed limiter or change gearbox shift speed. If any of those matter to you, a flash tune is the better fit, and we can happily provide one.

So which should you choose?

Choose bootmod3

If you have a supported petrol BMW, want the widest choice of maps and custom tuners, and like a cloud-based app with lots of features.

Choose MHD

If you have a supported petrol BMW and want fast flashing, real-time tuning and a modular licence. Many enthusiasts pick between the two on price, engine support and which community they prefer.

Choose a tuning box

If you drive a diesel, your car is under warranty, on finance or leased, your DME is locked, or you simply want a strong, reliable gain without reprogramming your car.

Not sure which suits your car? See the gains for your exact model, or ask us. We'll give you a straight answer, even if that answer is a flash tune.
