Volvo Engine & Tuning Expertise

Volvo Tuning Expertise Across Diesel and
Turbo Petrol
Engines

Volvo has used a wide range of diesel and turbo petrol engines across
its model line-up, and the correct tuning approach can vary significantly
depending on the engine generation and fuel system fitted to the vehicle.
Bluespark Volvo tuning boxes are selected and developed around the
technology used by each application, rather than relying on one generic
solution across the entire range.

From earlier common-rail diesel engines through to later Drive-E applications,
i-ART fuel systems and modern turbo petrol engines, our Volvo tuning range is
designed to work with the specific signals and engine-management systems
used by each vehicle.

Common Rail Drive-E i-ART Injection Turbo Petrol Locked ECU
Earlier Diesel Applications

Volvo Diesel Tuning

Many earlier Volvo diesel models use conventional common-rail fuel systems, where tuning can be achieved by working with signals from the boost and fuel-rail pressure sensors.

Our diesel tuning boxes are designed to optimise these signals in a controlled way, helping to improve torque, mid-range performance and overall drivability. This can be particularly noticeable in larger Volvo models, where additional torque can make the engine feel stronger and more responsive during everyday driving.

Later Diesel Technology

Volvo Drive-E Diesel Engines

Volvo's later-generation diesel engines introduced a different approach to engine and fuel management, including the 1,969cc Drive-E diesel applications that began appearing from around 2014.

These engines require a different tuning solution from the earlier 1,984cc common-rail engines. Some applications use Volvo's i-ART injection system, meaning the tuning box must interact with the vehicle differently from a conventional diesel module.

For this reason, Bluespark offers specialist tuning solutions developed specifically for these Volvo diesel engines rather than attempting to use a standard common-rail tuning box where it is not suitable.

We explain the i-ART system and how our dedicated module works with it in more detail further down this page.

Petrol Applications

Volvo Turbo Petrol Tuning

Volvo has increasingly relied on turbocharged petrol engines across models such as the V40, V60, S60, XC40, XC60 and XC90.

A well-developed tuning box can improve the way these engines deliver power by increasing performance through the usable rev range rather than focusing only on a headline peak-power figure.

The result can be stronger acceleration, improved throttle response and a more immediate feel during everyday driving, while retaining the original ECU software.

Correct Application Matching

Different Volvo Engines Require Different Tuning Solutions

One of the most important parts of tuning a Volvo correctly is identifying the exact engine and engine-management system fitted to the vehicle.

Two Volvo models that appear similar on paper may use different engine generations, sensors or fuel-system technology. Even within the same model year, there can be crossover between older and newer engine variants.

That is why our Volvo tuning range is organised around the specific engine, power output and vehicle application, ensuring that the correct tuning box and wiring system are supplied for the vehicle.

Broad Volvo Coverage

Tuning Solutions for Older and Newer Volvo Models

Our Volvo range covers both established diesel and petrol applications and newer vehicles that use more advanced engine-management technology.

This includes applications where a conventional tuning solution can be used, as well as later Volvo models that require more specialised hardware because of systems such as i-ART injection or a locked factory ECU.

By developing solutions around the technology fitted to the vehicle, we can continue to offer performance upgrades for Volvo owners across a broad range of engine generations.

Later-Generation Volvo Tuning

Volvo Tuning for Locked ECU Models

Many later-model Volvos use locked factory ECUs, which can prevent the vehicle from being tuned through a conventional ECU remap. This is particularly relevant across newer Volvo applications using Freescale-based engine management, where the ECU cannot currently be accessed and rewritten in the same way as many earlier vehicles.

For owners of these models, this can significantly limit conventional tuning options. A Bluespark Volvo tuning box provides an alternative way to increase performance without needing to unlock, open or reprogram the factory ECU.

Locked Factory ECU
No ECU Rewrite

Removable & Reversible
The Challenge

Why Are Some Volvo ECUs Locked?

An ECU remap normally involves accessing the engine control unit and modifying the calibration stored within it. On many newer Volvo applications, additional security within the ECU prevents tuners from reading and writing this software using conventional remapping methods.

Where the ECU remains locked, the original calibration cannot simply be modified to increase power and torque.

This does not necessarily mean that the vehicle cannot be tuned.

Rather than attempting to alter the software inside the ECU, our tuning boxes work externally with the engine-management signals already being used by the vehicle.

The Bluespark Solution

Performance Tuning Without ECU Remapping

A Bluespark tuning box allows compatible locked-ECU Volvos to be tuned without rewriting the factory ECU software.

The module connects to specific sensors within the engine management system and carefully adjusts the relevant signals before they reach the ECU.

This allows the engine's performance characteristics to be optimised while the original ECU calibration remains untouched.

This makes a tuning box particularly valuable on Volvo models where a conventional ECU remap is not currently available.

Performance Benefits

What Can a Locked-ECU Volvo Tuning Box Deliver?

Depending on the Volvo application, the tuning system can help deliver:

Increased Power & Torque
Stronger Mid-Range Acceleration
Improved Throttle Response
More Responsive Everyday Performance
Removable & Reversible
Later Volvo Models

A Practical Tuning Solution for Later Volvo Models

For many newer Volvo owners, a locked ECU can otherwise mean having very limited options for increasing engine performance.

Because our Volvo tuning boxes do not depend on gaining access to the software inside the ECU, they can provide a performance upgrade on compatible vehicles even where the ECU itself cannot be conventionally remapped.

This gives owners of later Volvo models access to increased performance without waiting for an ECU unlocking solution to become available.

Application-Specific Tuning

Developed Around the Technology Fitted to Your Volvo

Not every Volvo uses the same ECU, sensors or engine-management system, which is why selecting the correct tuning solution is important.

Bluespark tuning boxes are supplied according to the specific Volvo model, engine, power output and engine-management technology fitted to the vehicle .

The connectors and tuning method can therefore differ between applications rather than relying on one universal system.

Specialist Volvo Diesel Tuning

Volvo i-ART Diesel Tuning

Some later Volvo diesel engines require a more specialised tuning solution than a conventional common-rail diesel tuning box. This is particularly relevant to the 1,969cc Volvo diesel engines introduced from around 2014, which use Volvo's i-ART fuel-injection technology.

Earlier Volvo diesel applications commonly used 1,984cc engines with a traditional common-rail system. During the 2014–2015 period there was some crossover between these earlier engines and the newer 1,969cc units, so identifying the exact engine fitted to the vehicle is important when selecting the correct Volvo diesel tuning box.

Specialist Volvo Diesel Technology Developed Around Volvo i-ART Applications
Understanding the Technology

What Is Volvo i-ART?

i-ART uses a different method of monitoring fuel injection from a conventional common-rail diesel system.

Rather than relying solely on a single pressure sensor within the common rail, the i-ART system receives pressure feedback from each individual fuel injector. Each injector incorporates its own monitoring electronics, allowing the engine-management system to continually assess injection pressure and make adjustments for each cylinder.

This enables the system to monitor and adapt the amount of fuel delivered during each combustion cycle with a high level of precision.

For tuning purposes, however, that difference in fuel-system design means these engines cannot simply be treated in the same way as a conventional common-rail Volvo diesel.

Why the Connection Method Matters

Why i-ART Volvos Need a Specialist Tuning Box

Our standard Pro + Boost diesel tuning boxes typically connect to the vehicle's boost-pressure sensor and common-rail pressure sensor. On an i-ART-equipped Volvo, the fuel system works differently because pressure information is monitored at the individual injectors rather than through the conventional rail-pressure arrangement.

Conventional Common-Rail Volvo Standard Pro + Boost Connection Boost Pressure Sensor + Fuel-Rail Pressure Sensor
Volvo i-ART Diesel Specialist i-ART Connection Boost Pressure Sensor + i-ART Injector Connections
Application-Specific Hardware

Developed Specifically for Volvo i-ART Applications

For these vehicles, we use a specially adapted Volvo i-ART tuning module.

The system connects to the boost pressure sensor + i-ART injector connections rather than the conventional boost pressure sensor + fuel-rail pressure sensor arrangement.

This allows the tuning box to work with the engine-management technology actually fitted to the vehicle instead of attempting to apply a standard diesel tuning solution to an incompatible fuel system.

Bluespark's regular Pro + Boost diesel tuning system was carefully adapted for these Volvo applications, including the specialist connections required to interface with the i-ART injectors.

This allows us to provide a tuning solution that works alongside the vehicle's existing injection technology while retaining the plug-and-play principles of our other tuning modules.

The result is a system designed to improve power, torque and mid-range performance while working with the sophisticated fuel-management strategy used by these later Volvo diesel engines.

Identifying the Correct Engine

1,969cc or 1,984cc Volvo Diesel?

Because the changeover happened around the 2014–2015 period, model year alone is not always enough to determine which system a Volvo uses. Some vehicles from this period may still use the earlier 1,984cc common-rail diesel engine, while others use the newer 1,969cc engine with i-ART technology.

1,984cc

Earlier Common-Rail Diesel

Earlier 1,984cc diesel applications generally use the more conventional common-rail arrangement and therefore use a different tuning-box connection method.

1,969cc

Later i-ART Diesel

If your Volvo has a 1,969cc diesel engine, it may require our specialist i-ART tuning solution with the dedicated injector connections.

That distinction matters because the tuning hardware and connection method are different. When selecting your vehicle, we match the tuning box to the specific model, engine, power output and fuel system , helping ensure that the correct module and wiring harness are supplied.

Specialist Volvo Diesel Tuning

Different Volvo Diesel Generations Need Different Solutions

The introduction of i-ART is a good example of why Volvo tuning cannot be approached with a single universal product.

Different generations of Volvo diesel engine use fundamentally different methods of monitoring and controlling fuel pressure, and the tuning hardware needs to take those differences into account.

By developing a dedicated solution for Volvo i-ART diesel engines, Bluespark can offer compatible tuning options for vehicles that require more specialised hardware than a conventional diesel tuning box.

Real Testing. Measured Results.

Tested Volvo Tuning Results

Performance claims are most useful when they can be backed up with real testing. At Bluespark, we use dyno testing, data logging and real vehicle development to assess how our Volvo tuning boxes perform across the rev range — not simply at the point where peak power is produced.

Our aim is to develop usable performance, with stronger power and torque delivery through the areas of the rev range that matter during everyday driving.

In-House Development

Developed and Tested by Bluespark

Bluespark develops its own tuning hardware and software using in-house rolling-road testing, giving our engineers the ability to test, adjust and refine tuning solutions for different engines and applications. Our tuning modules use engine-specific software rather than a single generic calibration intended to cover every vehicle.

Peak horsepower is only one part of a good tuning result.

When developing our Volvo tuning solutions, we look at how power and torque are delivered throughout the rev range, with the aim of producing improvements that can actually be felt during everyday driving.

Depending on the application, this can mean stronger mid-range torque, improved acceleration, reduced hesitation and a more responsive engine without simply chasing the highest possible peak figure.

Different Volvo engines also respond differently to tuning, which is why our products use engine-specific calibration rather than treating every petrol or diesel Volvo as the same application.

Real Volvo Tuning Examples

Further examples from Volvo applications developed and tested by Bluespark.

XC40

Volvo XC40 (2018)

2.0 D4 • 190hp

Tested Result 235hp / 464Nm
What Improved

This particular engine uses the i-ART system. In short, it uses pressure feedback from each fuel injector, allowing the system to continuously monitor and adapt fuel injection, ensuring the ideal amount of fuel is injected per combustion cycle in each of the four cylinders.

Due to the technology used here, we use our specialised tuning module to connect to each of the four injectors, as well as the boost sensor.

Now delivering over 235hp with an additional 64Nm of torque over what is quoted at stock, we have not only lifted those peak figures, but focused on where those gains are applied. The engine now pulls much harder through the rev range, with reduced turbo lag and improved consistency, transforming how it feels on the road.

V60

Volvo V60 (2025)

2.0 B4 • 197hp

Tested Result 226hp / 340Nm
What Improved

Our Volvo tuning development is not limited to older vehicles. We also work with newer Volvo engine-management systems where conventional ECU tuning can be much more restrictive.

This is an example of an application with a locked ECU that cannot be conventionally read and rewritten. Instead of modifying the ECU software, the Bluespark module works externally through the vehicle's engine-management sensors, providing an alternative tuning route for compatible later-model Volvos.

Now delivering 226hp with 340Nm of torque, we have not only lifted the peak figures, but focused on where those gains are applied. The engine pulls much harder through the revs, with reduced turbo lag and much improved consistency across the rev range.

V40

Volvo V40 (2019)

1.5 T3 • 152hp

Tested Result 181hp / 297Nm
What Improved

Sharper acceleration, smoother power delivery and a more responsive feel through the rev range.

Not only have we increased the peak figures, but we also focus on consistency throughout the rev range. The gains are brought in as soon as possible, helping to reduce turbo lag, before applying that power and torque where it is needed across the rest of the rev range.

The result is a stronger, smoother and more enjoyable drive on the road.

Vehicle-Specific Development

Tested, Refined and Vehicle-Specific

Volvo's range includes conventional common-rail diesels, i-ART equipped Drive-E engines, turbo petrol applications and later vehicles with locked ECUs. Each presents different tuning requirements.

By combining dyno testing, vehicle-specific development and application-specific hardware, we can build tuning solutions around the actual engine technology fitted to the vehicle.

This approach allows us to focus on what matters most: strong, usable performance throughout the rev range rather than a single headline number.

Product Explanation

How Our Volvo Tuning Boxes Work

A Bluespark Volvo tuning box works alongside the vehicle’s existing engine management system to improve performance without rewriting the software inside the factory ECU.

Rather than applying one universal approach to every Volvo, the tuning box and wiring harness are matched to the specific engine and technology fitted to the vehicle. This is particularly important across the Volvo range, where conventional common-rail diesels, i-ART engines, turbo petrol models and later locked-ECU applications can all require different tuning methods.

Volvo being developed and tested by Bluespark Automotive
How the System Works

Optimising Engine Signals for More Performance

Modern engines rely on a network of sensors to continuously provide the ECU with information about how the engine is operating.

A Bluespark tuning box connects to selected engine-management sensors and works with these signals to optimise the way the engine delivers power and torque.

The factory ECU remains in control of the engine, while the tuning module operates externally to provide the additional performance.

The exact connections used depend on the engine fitted to the vehicle.

Increased power and torque
Stronger mid-range acceleration
Improved throttle response
More responsive everyday performance
Smoother, more usable power delivery
Application-Specific Development

Vehicle-Specific Volvo Tuning

Different generations of Volvo engine use different sensors and fuel-management systems, so the same tuning box configuration cannot simply be used across the entire range.

For this reason, we match each tuning system to the specific Volvo model, engine, power output and engine-management technology fitted to the vehicle.

Conventional Common-Rail Diesel Typically works through the boost-pressure and fuel-rail pressure sensors.
Volvo i-ART Diesel Uses our specialist solution through the boost sensor and individual injector connections.
Turbo Petrol & Later Volvo Applications Can require different sensor connections and application-specific tuning strategies again.
Factory ECU Remains Intact

No ECU Software Rewriting Required

Unlike an ECU remap, a tuning box does not require the original software inside the engine control unit to be rewritten.

The module works externally with the vehicle's engine-management signals, leaving the factory ECU software in place.

This is particularly useful for compatible later-model Volvos with locked ECUs, where conventional ECU access and remapping may not be available.

Because the Bluespark tuning box does not rely on rewriting the ECU software, these vehicles can still have a route to increased performance where a traditional remap is not possible.

Straightforward Vehicle-Specific Fitting

Plug-and-Play Installation

Our Volvo tuning boxes use application-specific wiring harnesses and connectors designed for the relevant vehicle.

Installation typically involves locating the required sensors or injector connections within the engine bay, connecting the Bluespark wiring harness and then securely positioning the tuning module.

There is no need to solder into the vehicle's wiring or permanently modify the factory ECU.

01

Locate the Required Engine Sensors

Identify the correct connection points for your specific Volvo application.

02

Connect the Bluespark Wiring Harness

The vehicle-specific connectors fit between the original engine connections and the tuning module.

03

Secure the Tuning Box

Position the module safely within the engine bay and enjoy the additional performance.

Installation support: Detailed fitting instructions are supplied for the relevant application, and our team can provide support if required.
Flexible Performance Upgrade

Removable and Reversible

Because the factory ECU software is not rewritten, the tuning box can also be removed if required.

Disconnecting the module and reconnecting the original factory connections returns the vehicle to its standard hardware configuration.

This makes a tuning box a flexible option for owners who do not want to make a permanent software change to their Volvo.

Real-World Performance

Developed for Everyday Volvo Performance

Our aim is not simply to produce the largest possible headline power figure.

Volvo tuning boxes are developed to improve usable power and torque across the rev range, helping the vehicle feel stronger and more responsive during normal driving.

Whether that means stronger mid-range torque from a Volvo diesel or improved response from a turbo petrol engine, the tuning solution is selected around the characteristics and technology of the individual application.

Volvo Diesel Range

Volvo D2, D3, D4 and D5 Diesel Engines

Volvo's D2, D3, D4 and D5 designations have been used across a variety of diesel engines and generations, including conventional common-rail and later Drive-E applications.

Earlier Volvo diesels commonly use a more traditional common-rail fuel system, allowing our tuning modules to work with signals such as boost pressure and fuel-rail pressure.

Depending on the application, tuning can provide stronger torque delivery, improved mid-range performance and a more responsive feel during everyday driving.

Because Volvo has used the same D-designations across different engines and model years, the badge on the boot is not always enough to identify the correct tuning system. Engine capacity, power output and production year all need to be considered.

Diesel Common Rail  Drive-E
Larger Diesel Applications

Volvo 2.0 and 2.4-Litre Diesel Engines

Volvo's larger diesel engines have powered a wide range of models over the years, particularly within the S60, V60, V70, XC60, XC70 and XC90 ranges.

These engines are well suited to torque-focused tuning, where the aim is not simply to increase peak horsepower but to provide stronger performance through the part of the rev range most commonly used on the road.

The exact tuning method varies between the earlier common-rail engines and later Drive-E applications, which is why each vehicle is matched to the appropriate Bluespark module.

Turbo Petrol Range

Volvo T2, T3, T4 and T5 Turbo Petrol Engines

Volvo's T2, T3, T4 and T5 badges cover a broad selection of turbocharged petrol engines fitted across models such as the V40, S60, V60, XC40 and XC60.

Depending on the generation, these include smaller-capacity turbo petrol engines as well as later 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre Drive-E applications.

Our Volvo petrol tuning boxes are designed to improve power delivery, throttle response and mid-range acceleration while retaining the original factory ECU software.

The exact gains and tuning configuration depend on the individual engine and factory power output.

Turbo Petrol 1.5 Litre 2.0 Litre  Drive-E
Higher-Output Petrol

Volvo T6 and Higher-Output Petrol Applications

Selected T6 and other higher-output Volvo petrol engines can also be suitable for tuning, depending on the specific engine generation and management system fitted.

These applications can use more sophisticated turbocharging and engine-management strategies than lower-output models, so the tuning solution must be matched carefully to the vehicle rather than treating the engine as simply a more powerful version of a T4 or T5.

Where supported, our aim remains the same: to improve usable performance across the rev range while working with the original Volvo engine-management system.

Choosing Your Volvo Tuning Solution

Volvo Tuning Box or ECU Remap?

Both a tuning box and an ECU remap can be used to increase the performance of a Volvo, but they achieve this in different ways. Which option is most suitable depends on the vehicle, the engine-management system fitted and what the owner wants from the upgrade.

For some Volvo models, an ECU remap may be a suitable option. For others — particularly later vehicles with locked ECUs — a Volvo tuning box can provide a practical way to increase performance without needing access to the software inside the factory ECU.

External Tuning Module

How Does a Volvo Tuning Box Work?

A tuning box is an external module that connects to selected sensors within the engine-management system.

Rather than rewriting the calibration stored inside the ECU, the module works with the signals used by the vehicle to optimise power and torque delivery.

A Bluespark Volvo tuning box is supplied with application-specific wiring and connectors and can be removed again if required.

Because the original ECU software is not rewritten, the vehicle can also be returned to its standard hardware configuration by removing the module and reconnecting the original factory connections.

This makes a tuning box a particularly attractive option for Volvo owners who want a plug-and-play, removable and reversible performance upgrade .

Works By Working externally with selected engine-management signals
ECU Software Original factory software remains in place
Removal Module can be disconnected if required
Software-Based Tuning

How Is an ECU Remap Different?

An ECU remap works by modifying the calibration stored directly within the vehicle's engine control unit.

Where ECU access is available, a tuner can adjust parameters within the factory software to alter how the engine operates.

This can provide a very effective tuning solution and may be the preferred option for some vehicles and owners.

Unlike a tuning box, however, the process depends on being able to access and rewrite the ECU.

That distinction is particularly important on newer Volvo models.

Works By Modifying calibration within the engine ECU
ECU Access Requires compatible access to read and write the ECU
Availability Depends on the ECU and engine-management system fitted
Later-Generation Volvo Applications

Tuning Later Volvos With Locked ECUs

Many later Volvo applications use locked engine control units that cannot currently be accessed for a conventional ECU remap.

Where the ECU cannot be read and rewritten, the usual remapping route is therefore unavailable.

A compatible Bluespark tuning box does not require the ECU software to be unlocked or modified. Because the module operates externally through the vehicle's engine-management signals, it can provide a route to increased power and torque on compatible locked-ECU Volvo models.

For some newer Volvo owners, this means a tuning box is not simply an alternative to a remap — it may be the practical tuning option available for that particular vehicle.

Which Option Is Right for My Volvo?

There is no single tuning method that is automatically best for every Volvo.

An older vehicle with an accessible ECU may be suitable for either a tuning box or an ECU remap, depending on the owner's requirements. A later Volvo with a locked ECU may have far fewer conventional remapping options, making a tuning box particularly relevant.

The most important factor is identifying the exact Volvo model, engine, power output and engine-management system before deciding which route to take.

Volvo S60

Engine:
1.6 D2
Product:
Pro + Boost

Fitted the Pro & Boost to improve low down torque. I just left it as it came on map C6. I am currently using map D8 & find this works best for me.

Big improvement on low down torque & pulls harder through the revs. To be honest I'm not bothered about top end, it was low down I found it needed it.

Absolutely no problems regarding any warning lights or anything, don't confuse these with the cheap resistor type rubbish on eBay.

Great product & great customer service! Keep up the good work.

Volvo XC90

Engine:
2.4 D5
Product:
Pro

Unit arrived the next day, easy to fit, even for an inept mechanical mind like mine!

Only had a short run today but it feels quicker, better pick up on the throttle and smoother.

Time will tell... Looking forward to a longer run with some overtaking opportunities, maybe find a Range Rover to play with.

Volvo V60

Engine:
1.6 D2
Product:
Pro

The info for fitting this chip on the 1.6 diesel engine says it's difficult to fit and the battery has to be removed. It doesn't.

You only need two people, one with small hands to get hold of the connector and the other one to go in from the top with a bit of wire to hook the clip on top of the connector. The new connector just pushes on so it can all be done in 10 minutes.

The chip was set to map C and setting 6 and it transformed the car. The flat spots through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears disappeared and the roll on power in 5th and 6th is a lot better.

There was also a slight improvement on MPG which I'm sure will get better in time.

I would highly recommend this product. It's turned my car into what it should have been from the factory.

Volvo Tuning Help & Advice

Volvo Tuning FAQs

Answers to some of the most common questions about Volvo tuning boxes, locked ECUs, i-ART diesel engines, installation, performance and choosing the correct tuning solution.

Can a Volvo with a locked ECU still be tuned?

Yes, in many cases. A number of later Volvo models use locked factory ECUs, including Freescale-based engine-management systems that cannot currently be accessed and rewritten using conventional ECU remapping methods.

A compatible Volvo tuning box provides an alternative because it works externally with the vehicle's engine-management signals rather than rewriting the software stored inside the ECU.

This means that even when a conventional ECU remap is not available, a suitable Bluespark tuning box may still provide a route to increased power and torque.

What is Volvo i-ART and why does it need a different tuning box?

Volvo's i-ART injection system uses pressure feedback from the individual fuel injectors rather than relying on a conventional single pressure sensor in the common rail.

Each injector monitors injection pressure, allowing the engine-management system to continually adapt fuel delivery for each cylinder.

Because the system operates differently from a traditional common-rail diesel, an i-ART Volvo requires a different tuning solution.

Our specialist Volvo i-ART module connects to the boost-pressure sensor and injector connections , rather than the boost and rail-pressure sensors typically used by our standard diesel tuning systems.

Does my 1,969cc Volvo diesel require an i-ART tuning box?

Some Volvo 1,969cc diesel engines introduced from around 2014 use i-ART technology and therefore require our specialist tuning system.

During approximately 2014–2015 there was some crossover between these newer engines and the previous-generation 1,984cc diesel engines, so model year alone is not always enough to identify the correct product.

If your Volvo is from this transition period, the engine capacity, factory power output and exact application should be checked before selecting a tuning box.

What is the difference between the 1,969cc and 1,984cc Volvo diesel engines?

The earlier 1,984cc Volvo diesels generally use a more conventional common-rail injection arrangement. On compatible applications, our standard diesel tuning system can therefore work with signals from the boost-pressure and fuel-rail pressure sensors.

The later 1,969cc engines belong to Volvo's newer engine generation, with some applications using i-ART injection technology. These vehicles can require a specialist module and a different wiring arrangement.

Although the difference in engine capacity appears relatively small, the underlying fuel-system technology can be significantly different, which is why identifying the exact engine is important.

Is a Volvo tuning box better than an ECU remap?

Neither option is automatically better for every Volvo.

An ECU remap modifies the calibration stored directly within the factory engine control unit. A tuning box works externally with selected engine-management signals without rewriting the original ECU software.

A tuning box may be preferable if you want a removable and reversible upgrade, do not want the factory ECU software rewritten, or own a compatible later Volvo with an ECU that cannot currently be conventionally remapped.

For vehicles where ECU access is available, either approach may be suitable depending on the vehicle and the owner's requirements.

Will a Bluespark tuning box change the software in my Volvo's ECU?

No. A Bluespark tuning box does not rewrite the calibration stored inside the factory ECU.

The module operates externally through the relevant engine-management connections, allowing the original ECU software to remain in place.

This is one of the reasons tuning boxes can be particularly useful on compatible Volvo models with locked ECUs.

How is a Volvo tuning box installed?

Installation varies according to the engine and tuning system required, but Bluespark Volvo tuning boxes use application-specific plug-and-play wiring and connectors .

A conventional diesel application may connect to the boost and fuel-rail pressure sensors, while an i-ART diesel requires connections to the boost sensor and individual injectors. Petrol and newer Volvo applications can use different sensor connections again.

The original connectors are disconnected, the Bluespark harness is fitted between the appropriate factory connections, and the tuning module is then securely positioned within the engine bay.

There is no need to solder into the factory wiring or rewrite the ECU software.

Can I remove the tuning box and return my Volvo to standard?

Yes. One of the main advantages of a tuning box is that it is removable and reversible.

The module and wiring harness can be disconnected and the vehicle's original factory connections restored.

Because the ECU software itself has not been rewritten, the tuning system does not require the ECU to be flashed back to its original calibration when the box is removed.

How much more power and torque can I expect from Volvo tuning?

The increase depends on the specific Volvo model, engine, factory power output and tuning system fitted , so there is no single figure that accurately represents every Volvo.

As an example of our own testing, a 2019 Volvo V40 1.5 T3 produced 152hp and 269Nm in standard form during our dyno testing.

With the Bluespark tuning box fitted, this increased to 181hp and 297Nm — gains of 29hp and 28Nm.

Other Volvo engines will produce different results, which is why we recommend checking the figures for your exact application rather than applying a generic percentage gain across the whole range.

Will a Volvo tuning box affect my warranty?

Warranty implications can vary depending on the vehicle, manufacturer terms, dealer policy and the circumstances of any warranty claim.

However, our tuning modules are 100% traceless. This means that once it is removed, no trace is left behind, all values revert back to stock figures, and the dealership will not be able to tell it was ever installed. This allows you to benefit from the increased performance, whilst your warranty remains safe.

How do I know which Volvo tuning box I need?

Because Volvo has used the same model and engine badges across different generations, choosing a product based purely on a designation such as D4, T5 or B4 is not always sufficient.

The correct product should be matched using your Volvo model, engine, factory power output and year , along with the engine-management technology fitted to the vehicle.

Use the Volvo vehicle selector to find your application. If you are unsure — particularly with a 2014–2015 diesel, an i-ART vehicle or a later Volvo with a locked ECU — contact the Bluespark team and we can help identify the correct tuning solution.
